Castles and Fortresses in Skåne

Castles and Fortresses in Skåne

Skåne, a province in southern Sweden, is home to a rich history of castles and fortresses. One of the most notable towns in Skåne is Åhus, a coastal town in Kristianstad Municipality. With its picturesque location along the shores of the Baltic Sea, Åhus has become a popular summer resort for both locals and tourists. In addition to its natural beauty, Åhus is also known for its vodka production, being the home of The Absolut Company AB, owned by Pernod Ricard.

A Short History of Åhus

Åhus has a long and storied history dating back many centuries. It was originally a marketplace known as Aos in the 13th century before evolving into Åhus in the 14th century. The town’s local fortress was built in the 11th century and was later joined by medieval constructions such as the town hall.

During the Middle Ages, Åhus experienced its glory days. However, the town began to decline with the Reformation in the 16th century and the ongoing conflicts between Denmark and Sweden. Åhus lost its town status in 1617 when nearby Kristianstad was established. In 1658, Åhus and the rest of Skåne became a part of Sweden with the Treaty of Roskilde.

The arrival of the railway in Åhus in 1883 brought about a period of tourism and industrialization. Thousands of visitors flocked to the town by train, eager to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Today, the railway is primarily used for freight and is famous for its weekly “vodka train.” Åhus has been producing vodka for over a century and remains the only town where Absolut Vodka is produced.

Things to Do and See in Åhus

Åhus is a charming town with a rich historical atmosphere. As you walk along its cobblestone streets, you can’t help but feel transported back in time. While modern cars may disrupt the medieval ambiance, the town’s historical buildings still exude a sense of the past. A visit to Åhus should include a stroll along the marina, a visit to the famous vodka producer, and exploration of the medieval town center. And of course, no trip to Åhus would be complete without a visit to one of its beautiful beaches.

Åhus Museum

Located in the central square, Åhus Museum is housed in the old medieval town hall. The museum offers exhibitions on the town’s history as well as temporary summer exhibitions. It’s a great place to learn more about Åhus and its rich heritage.

Åhus Borg

Believed to have been built in the 11th century, Åhus Borg is a fortress with a fascinating history. It may be the oldest stone fortress in Scandinavia. While it was once a castle, it eventually fell into ruin in the 17th century along with the decline of Åhus. Today, the castle ruins have been excavated and visitors can explore the enclosed space surrounded by stone walls.

Sankta Maria Kyrka

The Church of Saint Mary is the main town church in Åhus and has a history dating back to the 12th century. This red brick church with its tower is a prominent landmark in the town. It is part of the Åhus Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Täppetstranden & Åhusbryggan

Täppetstranden, also known as Täppet Havsbad, is a long sandy beach located to the northeast of the town center. The beach seems to stretch on endlessly, offering a perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. Near the southern end of the beach, you’ll find Åhusbryggan, a 120-meter-long jetty that extends into the Baltic Sea. It’s a great spot for a leisurely stroll or to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Äspet

To the south of the town center lies Äspet, a nature area worth exploring. Here, you’ll find Kronoskogen, a forested area perfect for a tranquil walk. Äspet is also home to a lagoon known for its bird-watching opportunities. However, it’s the long sandy beach that attracts most visitors during the summer. Hidden beneath the sand is a mysterious shipwreck, adding an air of intrigue to the area.
